A day of adventure in Ollantaytambo: river, horses and pachamanca

Published on · 5 min read

Ideas to make the most of a full day in Ollantaytambo by combining rafting, a horse ride with valley views and traditional Andean food.

Ollantaytambo, much more than a stop

For many travellers Ollantaytambo is just the train station for Machu Picchu. Those who stay a day discover a still-inhabited Inca town surrounded by terraces, ancient quarries and a river made for adventure.

Morning: adrenaline on the river

Start early with rafting on the Urubamba. There are sections for first-timers and others with more action. After the safety briefing and with your gear on, you see the valley from a different angle: mountains on both sides and the water setting the pace.

Midday: flavours of the countryside

After the river, nothing beats a traditional meal. Pachamanca is cooked underground with hot stones, meats, potatoes and broad beans: it is an experience in itself. There are also dishes like fried trout or roasted guinea pig for those who want to try Andean cuisine.

Afternoon: on horseback to the viewpoint

End the day with a horse ride along valley trails. In the afternoon light, the viewpoint above Ollantaytambo offers one of the best views of the day. It is a relaxed activity, suitable for people with no riding experience.

How to organise it

Combining activities on the same day is possible, but schedules are best arranged in advance. Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size and we will suggest the order that works best.
